URBANA, OH (Aug. 28, 2002)-- In the days leading up to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a fund has been established at Urbana University in memory of Alicia Nicole Titus, the long-time Champaign County resident who was an attendant on United Airline Flight 175, the second airliner to hit the World Trade Center.

"The Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Fund" was established in August. So far, a gift of $2,000 has been received from the Boston Swedenborgian Church. To date, the Ohio Association of Swedenborgian Churches has pledged to donate to the fund as well, with the exact amount to be determined at its annual meeting in October. Others are invited to contribute to this fund.

The proposal to start the fund was made by Elizabeth ("Betsy") Coffman. Among the Urbana resident's numerous activities, she is a member of the Urbana University Board of Trustees and just completed a term as president of the Ohio Association of Swedenborgian Churches. Her proposal prompted a vote of the association in October 2001 to partner with Urbana University on establishing the fund in Miss Titus's memory. "The purpose of the fund is to carry out the legacy and spirit of Alicia's life, by enabling Urbana University to sponsor programs whose major focus would be to promote and support the cause of peace in the world," Mrs. Coffman said. Such programs could include speakers, panel discussions, workshop or seminars. As Mrs. Coffman pointed out, these programs would be beneficial for both Urbana University and the surrounding community. They could be held at the University or taken into local schools or other appropriate community settings, depending on the nature of the program. The fund could be used to hire speakers to discuss world peace, conflict resolution, tolerance, or cultural awareness, or to organize seminars on these topics, Mrs. Coffman said. The fund might also be used to hire an instructor to lead a course at Urbana University in peace studies or similar topic. Another possibility is to organize camps that would bring children of different cultures together. A portion of the annual interest from the fund will be used to support programs to be offered, she said.

"The Titus family is a part of the fabric of Urbana University," Dr. Robert Head, University President, said. "We are privileged to support Alicia's legacy by joining the Ohio Association of Swedenborgian Churches in developing peace initiatives."

The Tituses are long-time members of the Swedenborgian Church, and have been associated with Urbana University. Miss Titus's parents, John and Bev Titus, are graduates of Urbana University. Mr. Titus served as Dean of Students at Urbana University for 12 years before taking a position at Schoolcraft College near Detroit about four years ago. Their other daughter, Shanoa, also is an Urbana University graduate. Alicia Titus and her bother, Zach, attended the University for a period of time. Alicia Titus went on to graduate from Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. "Her family, her church, her community and friends desire to remember Alicia as an exuberant and vital young woman whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of peaceful living among human beings and loving service to others," Mrs. Coffman said.

"She totally opposed violence, acts of terrorism, hate, prejudice, killing or any act against another living thing," Mr. Titus said at his daughter's memorial service on Sept. 17, 2001. "Her true nature and human existence were totally opposite of the evil forces that took her life."

Mr. and Mrs. Titus have been involved in the development of the purpose for the fund and have expressed a desire that activities or programs to be supported by the fund should be keeping with the view that, in Mr. Titus's words, "peace is not just as absence of conflict."

"Peace is a state of harmony which occurs within and among human beings and their environment when they coexist with a spirit of cooperation and community-building, where differences of cultures, tradition and spiritual roots are respected and the practice of stewardship and service to others, to the community and to our natural environment are valued," Mrs. Coffman said. "Programs that support and further these principles will be considered appropriate recipients of proceeds from the fund."
